FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions About Bariatric Surgery in Turkey
Am I a candidate for weight loss surgery?
Most international guidelines consider bariatric surgery for adults with a body mass index of 40 or above, or 35 and above when an obesity-related condition such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure or obstructive sleep apnoea is present. Candidacy is never decided by numbers alone. Our team reviews your medical history, your previous weight-loss attempts, your current medication and your laboratory results before any procedure is recommended, and a full assessment with a surgeon, a dietitian and an anaesthetist takes place before you travel and again after you arrive.
Which procedure is right for me: sleeve, bypass or a non-surgical option?
Sleeve gastrectomy removes part of the stomach to reduce both its volume and the hunger hormone it produces. Gastric bypass and mini gastric bypass combine a smaller stomach with a change to the route food takes through the intestine, which can also help patients living with reflux or type 2 diabetes. Gastric balloon and gastric botox are temporary, non-surgical options, often chosen by patients who need a lower starting weight or who are not ready for an operation. The right choice depends on your body mass index, your medical history and your goals, and it is made together with your surgeon.
How long should I stay in Turkey?
A typical bariatric trip lasts seven to ten days. Pre-operative tests and consultations take one to two days, the hospital stay after sleeve or bypass surgery is usually two to three nights, and the remaining days allow for a follow-up check and clearance to fly. Non-surgical procedures such as a gastric balloon or gastric botox need a much shorter visit, often two to three days. Your surgeon confirms a fit-to-fly date before you book your return flight, and we never ask you to travel home earlier than that date.
What does recovery look like after surgery?
Most patients are encouraged to walk within hours of the operation and return to light daily activity within one to two weeks. The post-operative diet moves in stages from clear liquids to pureed food, then soft food and finally regular meals, usually over four to six weeks. Lifelong vitamin and mineral supplements, regular blood tests and protein-focused eating are part of a safe long-term result. Our team stays in contact after you fly home and coordinates follow-up at one month, three months, six months and one year.
Is bariatric surgery in Turkey safe?
Safety depends on the hospital, the surgical team and the follow-up, not on the destination itself. Before you book, ask which hospital you will be treated in and whether it is licensed by the Turkish Ministry of Health, how many bariatric procedures the surgeon performs each year, who is responsible if a complication occurs, and exactly what aftercare is included. Ask for those answers in writing. Our coordinators answer these questions for every patient before travel, and the first consultation carries no obligation to proceed.
